Foreign Office to India Office.

Sir,

Foreign Office, August 22, 1904. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 12th ultimo, on the subject of the undelimited portion of the Burma-Yunnan boundary lying between the Nam-ting River and Nalawt, I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary of State for India, the accompanying copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at Peking, inclosing a copy of the reply of the Chinese Government to the note which he addressed to them on the 12th May last.

A copy of the despatch referred to in the last paragraph of Sir E. Satow's despatch was forwarded to you in the letter from this Office of the 11th December last year.

I am to say that Lord Lansdowne would be glad to be favoured with any observations which Mr. Secretary Brodrick may have to offer on the papers now submitted to him.

It will be seen that, in Sir E. Satow's opinion, the proposal now made by the Chinese Government for a joint delimitation of this portion of the frontier is not one which it would be advisable to accept.
